ACI Worldwide and IBM: Powering the next generation of enterprise payments

On this page

For more than 40 years, ACI Worldwide and IBM have been close partners in serving banks and processors, attaining the highest levels of performance, scalability, and resiliency ever contemplated in the financial services industry. In 2025, ACI celebrates 50 years of offering enterprise payment solutions. That heritage began with card processing using our BASE24 platform, and five decades later, ACI supports the world’s top 10 banks, handling hundreds of billions of card transactions annually.

Widely used for acquiring, authenticating, routing, switching, and authorizing card- and non-card-based financial transactions, BASE24-eps sets the standard for functionality, resiliency, and scalability, and is in production at many of the largest global banks.

ACI Proactive Risk Manager is an enterprise fraud management solution that enables the largest financial institutions to detect and prevent fraud

It allows users to respond to fraud quickly and efficiently in real-time. ACI Proactive Risk Manager leverages patented, powerful incremental learning capabilities for early warning and action in response to suspect activity, combining proven, business-driven strategies for behavior-based profiling, adaptive and predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence with unprecedented scalability and precision. ACI Proactive Risk Manager offers flexible inbound and outbound APIs that can be easily integrated with a wide range of back-end systems and processes, providing a comprehensive view of customer activity across card transactions, instant payments, cash deposits and withdrawals, cryptocurrency transactions, and more.

This is why it’s so exciting to share that ACI’s partnership with IBM has been further extended by offering two of ACI’s flagship solutions, BASE24-eps and ACI Proactive Risk Manager, as native 64-bit applications running on IBM’s flagship Z platform. Available in late 2025,
BASE24-eps and ACI Proactive Risk Manager offer full support for Z. Upcoming releases will include support for IBM’s latest z17 platform and the Telum II processor, with enhanced AI integration and advanced security and resiliency features. BASE24-eps is also PCI-SSF certified for PCI 4.0, continuing its trusted and secure heritage.

While all global banks and processors are exploring the implications and benefits of cloud-native designs

The largest, especially those in Europe, will continue to face pressure from regulators and central banks to demonstrate their strategies for minimizing concentration risk related to public cloud infrastructure. IBM’s Z platform provides an ideal solution, supporting a hybrid cloud architecture that offers the engineered resiliency, security, and scalability needed for critical infrastructure in the financial services ecosystem.

Our partnership with IBM also enables banks to future-proof their investment through Red Hat’s OpenShift on Z

OpenShift will provide ACI’s new cloud-native platform, ACI Connetic, the ability to operate in containerized workflows on the Z platform and in a hybrid public cloud model. These capabilities are critical not only for managing technical and operational risk, but also for regulatory risks, such as the need to avoid concentration in a single public cloud provider.

I’m eager to share more in the coming months about how IBM, Red Hat, and ACI Worldwide are further collaborating on the future of enterprise payments. It’s an exciting time indeed to be shaping the future together!
