¿Has Visto Tu Tarjeta de Crédito Últimamente? [Have You Seen Your Credit Card Lately?]

¿Has visto tu tarjeta de crédito últimamente?

  [View English version]

Have You Seen Your Credit Card Lately?

No, the question isn’t whether you’ve used your card (you almost certainly have), the question is whether you’ve seen it. In other words, have you have physically taken this 2.1 x 3.4-inch piece of plastic and made a transaction with it in any format (swipe, chip, contactless, etc.)?

Let’s look at an average day.

  • You wake up early and peacefully thanks to an app that predicts your sleep cycles and the best time for you to wake up, which you bought on your phone’s app store just by scanning your thumbprint.
  • On your walk to work, you place an order through the app of your favorite coffee shop, and when you arrive your coffee and breakfast are ready for you to take away. You grab them and go.
  • On the journey, you decide to listen to that song that’s been in your head, the one you found on your favorite music streaming app, for which you automatically pay a monthly membership.
  • At lunchtime, you feel like a hamburger from that restaurant where there’s always a huge line, so you order through an app where the amount is automatically charged to your card, you sit down at a table and they bring you your food. You eat and go.
  • In the afternoon, you remember a pizza recipe you’ve been meaning to try for ages, so you use an app to order ingredients from the grocery store, and they will be delivered to your apartment just as you’re arriving home from work.
  • It’s time to leave, so you use your smartphone to get a cab to pick you up at work and take you home. Once you arrive, you thank the driver and get out.
  • You’re now at home and, overestimating your abilities in the kitchen, you burn the pizza you were so looking forward to, but you won’t let that stop you. Using your smart TV, you then order a pizza, which arrives just in time for you to watch the next episode of the new series you’ve been watching through a streaming platform.

It’s certainly been a busy day, but have you seen your card? Do you even know where it is?

The answer will surely be “no,” and this can happen day after day. How has this happened? How have we gone from payment being a fundamental stage of the process to something we can go days without thinking about?

Simple. Using something called “Card on File,” a user (in this case, our failed chef) can register their preferred card with their most used apps and services, which then automatically charge it with zero fuss. The payments keep being made, they just happen in the background.

While “credit card” and “millennials” don’t necessarily go together (according to a Forbes study, 67% of millennials in the USA neither have, nor want, a credit card), these platforms may end up being the incentive for an increase in the use of credit cards. And if we also factor in loyalty programs from the issuing banks, alongside the apps we use most often, we have a significant motivator for younger generations to finally take their first foray into the world of credit cards.

In summary, whether it’s from the point of view of business, online payment platforms or acquisition, and whatever the stage in the transaction process, the final user expects a hassle-free, immediate and secure experience, whether at home or abroad. And with the double-digit annual growth of eCommerce, are you ready to capitalize on the opportunity?
