ACI Speedpay/YouGov Debit Consumer Trend Report

Debit is the quiet powerhouse of bill pay

New survey reveals debit is the leading bill payment method in the US and what this means for billers focused on customer experience.

What drives debit’s dominance in bill pay

Nearly half of bill payers worry that a payment could fail. Yet debit is the most-used bill payment method in the US, ahead of credit cards, ACH, mobile wallets, checks, and peer-to-peer payment apps.

Why? Consumers associate debit with the certainty, control, and immediate confirmation they want when an important bill is due.

Based on a 2026 ACI Speedpay/YouGov survey of 2,501 US adults, this report shows how billers can use those preferences to reduce payments friction, strengthen customer trust, and build more reliable payment experiences.

Report key findings:

  • 48% of bill payers are at least somewhat concerned that a payment could fail
  • 54% of US adults use debit to pay bills, more than any other payment method in the survey
  • 76% of debit bill-pay users say immediate payment confirmation is important when choosing how to pay a bill
  • 72% of debit bill-pay users say they use it often or always, showing that loyalty builds once debit is adopted
  • 75% would use debit more for bills if offered a discount, fee waiver, or reward
