NPR, Overdraft Fees, and Real Time Payments – The 2020 Gray’s Sports Almanac Edition

    Tuesday, May 05, 2015

To quote both Willie Nelson and the Pet Shop Boys, ‘you are always on my mind.’ And in this week’s ‘Rantings,’ I wanted to dive into a topic that’s been on my mind for a while. Whilst stuck in crappy traffic (is there any other?), I had a deja vu moment after tuning into my local NPR affiliate. This topic jumped out at me as something that I think banks have been struggling with mightily lately…overdraft fees and consumer protections. And here’s the NPR News Story from a few weeks back that caused the déjà vu, in case you’re interested.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you…the FinTech Fight Club

    Friday, April 24, 2015

In this latest (actually first) installment of Ask the Experts, I sit down with esteemed industry analyst Nick Holland. In addition to serving as Retail Payments Practice Lead at Javelin Strategy & Research, Nick is also the brains (and brawn) behind the nascent Fintech Fight Club. First rule of FinTech Fight Club? Don’t talk about Fintech Fight Club. The next “FFC” will be at a yet-to-be-named location somewhere in the contiguous US states in May…be sure to follow Nick on twitter @nickster2407 for updates.

Millennial Musings: what’s in their (digital and physical) wallets?

    Wednesday, April 22, 2015

Based on some industry estimates, millennials comprise 98% of all human beings on earth…and that’s pretty sizable. Now while other estimates are a tad smaller, the millennial generation is still vast, not to mention influential. And with so much buying power now and into the future, one can understand why.

'Cause I'm the Taxman, Yeah, I'm the Taxman

    Tuesday, April 07, 2015

While many of us have a proclivity for the Beatles, many of us also have a proclivity for procrastinating. We get the job done—and typically done well—but not until the deadlines beckon. And this seems to be more rampant for thousands, if not millions of us, during tax season. For those who are counting, taxes are due in a mere 8 days - less than 2 weeks left and agita is setting in. So this tax season, let’s do our best to prevent heartburn and indigestion…or worse. And let’s take the figurative tax returns by the horns. It might be too late to change our ‘wait until the last minute’ habits, but there are ways to make tax filing quick and easy.

Mobile: The Enhancement Channel (and Fresh Maker)

    Thursday, March 19, 2015

Who doesn't love a Mentos reference? And like the delicious candy/mint, mobile is the fresh maker. But when it comes to mobile banking, are we really talking about the 'now' or is it more like kickboxing, the sport of the future (to borrow a quote from the fictional Lloyd Dobler)? Let's explore in this latest edition of 'Rantings with Ranta'.

Mobile Banking, Mobile Payments and the Mobile Wallet

    Wednesday, February 18, 2015

Baby it’s (freakin’) cold outside, but mobile is hot (or to quote a band I love called The Cure, ‘hot, hot, hot’). In this next installment of ‘Rantings with Ranta’, we look at many things mobile—from banking to payments to wallets to the growing ‘unbanked’.

EMV: I dip, you dip, we dip (and some of us just swipe)

    Wednesday, February 04, 2015

In this latest edition of ‘Rantings with Ranta’, we explore EMV. While some of us might already have these shiny new chip cards in our wallets, most US consumers will be receiving theirs in the mail later this year, compliments of their card issuers. But once these hundreds of millions of cards are ready to use, will the transition be smooth like my favorite peanut butter or bumpy like Boston roads during pot hole season? The digital banking guru thinks the latter.

    Rantings with Ranta

    Friday, January 23, 2015

This marks the inaugural edition of ‘Rantings with Ranta’, an ongoing blog Q&A with my colleague and digital banking guru Mark Ranta, which each week or two will touch on one of the myriad hot-button topics in the banking/payments industry—from mobile wallets to wearables, virtual currencies to the cloud, EMV to retailer omni-channel, banking regulations and much more. We start out the series with the Bank Branch, once a bastion of activity and complimentary lollipops that is trying to remain relevant.
