RELATE and RELATE/24

RELATE is an intelligent data comparison and maintenance facility that dynamically reads record definitions contained in DDL dictionaries in order to perform field-level operations on Enscribe files. These operations may be record updates, inserts, and/or deletions performed globally across an entire file or constrained to a specified selection of records using SQLCI-like syntax. RELATE can also be used to intelligently compare database files by using algorithms appropriate to the types of file being compared. Because RELATE reads the record formats from the DDL dictionary, field differences can be identified by name or excluded from the comparison process.

RELATE/24

 
RELATE/24 is an add-on to the RELATE product. RELATE/24 understands BASE24 segmented files and handles variable length records.

RELATE/24 supports the use of variable-format records containing fields with the following characteristics:

• Conditionally present / optional groups and fields
• Variable-length groups and fields
• Multiple OCCURS DEPENDING groups and fields (i.e. Base24 6.0 segmented records; Raw Communication protocols)
• Field format / conversion with COPY CORRESPONDING comma
• User-defined field encoding with Custom Content Handlers

In order to support these formats, the fixed-format records are specified using DDL or COBOL; then RELATE commands can be executed to modify the format and make it variable. RELATE/24 adds to the capabilities offered within the RELATE product. Both options are available to customers, depending on their requirements.

ACI uses RELATE/24 in regression testing of BASE24 software. It is primarily used for comparisons between a regression test cycle and the expected baseline results. By using RELATE/24 during a regression test cycle, ACI is able to compare entire databases and display differences for any particular record at the field level. Not only does it compare BASE24 database files, but it also is used to compare edit files which hold results from using Enform reports. ACI also takes advantage of record modification and specific record selection during the development of the regression testbed. It helps ACI create repeatable testing procedures that improve productivity and efficiency.
